It was lost in the media cycle this week, given the border wall fight and government shutdown, but Democrats did something remarkable: they introduced legislation to ban millions of semi-automatic weapons.
In part, this shouldn't come as that much of a surprise. Dianne Feinstein had introduced a version of her "assault weapon ban" every year since her previous bill sunsetted (expired) back in 2004. But this year's ban is different. This version is much, much worse.
Typically, Feinstein's yearly gun ban bill targets semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, and pistols that have certain physical and cosmetic features or attachments. This legislation typically targets 'semi-automatic firearms, capable of accepting a detachable magazine, that possess one or more prohibited features.'
The ban always targets pistol grips, for example. State and federal bans have always described a pistol grip as a grip that "protrudes conspicuously beneath the action." So, gun owners that want to comply with the legislation have to modify their weapons to accept a more traditional hunting-style grip.
But this year, Feinstein's bill (Senate Bill 66) doesn't allow for any compliance and this is the part that is truly dangerous. Here is how the new bill defines a "pistol grip." The full text has not been released by the Government Publishing Office, but we were able to get a copy of the bill's draft text.
"The term 'pistol grip' means a grip, a thumbhole stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip." (emphasis added)
In other words, if you can hold it in your hand, this new bill would ban it. Millions and millions of semi-automatic firearms -- the most commonly owned guns in the country -- would suddenly be banned and anyone trying to buy, sell, or transfer one would instantly become a felon.
The worst part of all of this is that the Democrats have Republican support!
This past week, Nancy Pelosi introduced a massive gun control package (House Resolution 8) that would set up a universal gun registry to keep track of every time a firearm changes hands in this country. What makes their 'background check' bill so dangerous is that it would be coupled with the Establishments proposal for nationwide 'red flag' gun confiscations: where family members, friends, neighbors, and even strangers would be allowed to turn gun owners into police, even if they have done nothing wrong.
When Pelosi's bill was unveiled, it already had Republican co-sponsors: Congressmen Brian Mast (R-FL), Chris Smith (R-NJ), Peter King (R-NY), Fred Upton (R-MI), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).
We're not even a week into Democrat control of the House of Representatives and so-called Conservatives are already rushing to try to sign away your constitutional rights!
Feinstein's bill would be ten-times worse. It would outlaw entire classes of weapons and turn law-abiding gun owners into felons if they even try to leave their guns to family members in their wills. The Democrats aren't just trying to destroy the market for these weapons... they want to ensure that future generations are never able to own modern firearms for self-defense!
Democrats are already trying to whip up the Republican votes to push these two massive gun control bills through.
Earlier this year, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) announced that he would support a ban on so-called "high-capacity magazines." The Left is already trying to get him on board. Others like Susan Collins (ME) and Lisa Murkowski (AK) have also signaled a willingness to support this gun control package.
The Democrats are working to combine these two pieces of legislation into a massive gun control package.
Already, we're hearing the GOP talk about working on a "compromise" on gun control. What kind of compromises are on the table? Feinstein's bill would ban some guns instead of going after all guns and the red flag proposal would only allow courts to suspend someone's constitutional rights for 30 days without a hearing (as opposed to indefinitely).
That is what these GOP cowards mean when they say "compromise." You'll get to keep some of your guns and if you are targeted for targeted disarmament, you'll only have to wait 30 days to get your rights back. How absolutely pathetic...
Ronald Reagan famously said that our freedoms are never more than a generation away from extinction.
He was right. Democrats have been trying to implement these unconstitutional gun control policies now for 15 years. Now, they believe they have the votes to push it through!
The time to fight is now. If the Left pushes these two bills through, it will be too late to save the 2nd Amendment.
Don't let these enemies of the Constitution attack the 2nd Amendment and chip away at your right to keep and bear arms!
