Dear Conservative,
Obama has been making up his foreign policy as he goes along ever since he began his pursuit of the Presidency. An individual simply cannot learn enough about protecting American prestige and security by being a junior Senator.
No, everything Obama has learned about America and its place in the world, he learned from his childhood in Indonesia and his friendships with Bill Ayers, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Susan Rice, and others. Great company, huh?
Barack Obama believes that America must pay for its imperialist past. This is why he went around the world on his “apology tour” shortly after being elected.
Yet while the President of the United States is out apologizing the decades of American exceptionalism, the world is burning. Russian forces have seized Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, China continues to inch towards war over a number of small islands in the Pacific Ocean, North Korea has tested new missiles capable of striking U.S. ships and our allies in the region, and Iran continues to pursue a nuclear weapon in defiance of the international community.
There is absolutely no doubt that the United States and the rest of the world are less safe as a result of the Obama presidency. Our allies don’t trust us, our enemies no longer fear us, and the American people do not believe that their Commander in Chief has the experience or resolve to do what is necessary to protect U.S. interests!
In 1994, the United States joined Great Britain and, ironically, the Russian Federation in promising to respect and defend Ukraine’s sovereignty if the country gave up its nuclear weapons.
While everyone knows that the United States and Russia possess the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weapons, what few remember is that in the early 1990s, Ukraine possessed the world’s third largest stockpile of nuclear weapons. Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal was larger than those of Britain, France, and China combined.
Countries with nuclear weapons don’t face invasions or petty violations of sovereignty. That is because an attacking force understands that one wrong move could lead to nuclear war. The United States, Britain, and Russia promised that if Ukraine’s leaders gave up their nuclear stockpile and ceased relying on nuclear deterrence, they would have nothing to worry about because these world powers would defend Ukraine if necessary.
Obviously, hindsight is 20/20 in this case. Everyone now knows that Russia had absolutely no intention of defending the Ukraine from its own imperialist agenda. However, the US, UK, and later France and China promised to defend Ukraine with force, if necessary.
There are plenty of arguments why the U.S. legally has no responsibility to protect Ukraine from Russia. Mainly, it is important to remember that while President Clinton may have signed the Budapest Memorandum, it was never ratified by the Senate. Therefore, the Budapest Memorandum is not technically a binding US law.
However, when a President goes abroad and makes a promise to protect a country, the United States must keep it. Otherwise, our word is worth nothing. Obama has completely failed to respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and every day that passes without meaningful action is another reminder to the world that the United States’ promises aren’t worth the paper they are written on…
We pressured Ukraine to give up its nuclear weapons, the only real defense it had against Russian aggression. Now, with their backs against the wall, the Ukrainian government is turning to the US and UK and asking the West to make good on its promise.
If Barack Obama continues to waffle and limit his response to issuing vague warnings, you might as well kiss the United States’ reputation goodbye. No one will ever partner with us or believe us when we promise them something. And with the United States out of the way, you can expect for Russia and China to continue to spread their spheres of influence until their missiles are once again parked on our doorstep.
No one is suggesting that the United States must go to war over a tiny Ukrainian peninsula the size of Massachusetts. There is a reason that the U.S. and Russia have tried to avoid direct military confrontations: to spare the earth from the nuclear holocaust that would eventually follow.
There are many things the administration can do without putting “boots on the ground.” The US and its allies could impose economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation, remove Russia from the G8, arm the Ukrainians so they have a fighting chance, or revive NATO’s missile defense shield that Russia has opposed for so long.
The point is that the United States must do something! The fate of the world and the United States’ reputation depend on Barack Hussein Obama finding the bravery to execute his responsibility as Commander in Chief and leader of the free world. I don’t know about you, but I won’t hold my breath on that one…
There is absolutely no doubt that Russia stood to benefit from Obama winning the Presidency. Sarah Palin, during the 2008 campaign, came out and predicted that if Russia was allowed to invade Georgia, Putin’s next target would be the Ukraine. The lap-dog news media criticized Palin for not knowing what she was talking about and continued to push the lie that Sarah Palin claimed she could see Russia from her house (Palin never said this. This quote is attributed to Tina Fey’s impersonation of Palin on Saturday Night Live).
During one of the 2012 Presidential Debates, Barack Obama criticized Mitt Romney for saying that Russia continues to be our biggest geo-political foe. Who can forget this zinger that Obama blasted Romney with:
“A few months ago when you were asked what’s the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia… the 1980’s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.”
No, Mr. President, the truth is that you are the one stuck in the past. Your administration is so inept and disrespected around the world that you are starting to make Jimmy Carter look good. And no, that is not a compliment.
Remember how the liberal pundits laughed at Romney over this? The media portrayed Romney as out of touch and Obama was able to just skate by. When Obama isn’t praising and bowing down to our enemies (literally), he is trying to convince the American people that there is nothing to worry about.
Russia invades a sovereign nation and ally of the United States? No big deal, according to Obama.
The truth is that the world is laughing at our President. Never before in our history has a President been so wrong, so frequently. On domestic policy issues and international diplomacy, Pres. Obama has proven time and time again that he really has no idea what he is doing.
Or, have Obama’s blunders been by design? Don’t forget about the fact that when Barack Obama thought no one was listening, he leaned over to Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and promised that after the election he would have “more flexibility.” More flexibility to do what? Sell out our allies?
All the liberal pundits laughed and insisted that Barack Obama would never deliberately sell out the United States or our allies… Yet that appears to be exactly what he is doing!
It would be naïve to believe that Russia’s expansionist desires end at Crimean peninsula. As long as Barack Obama continues to put forward a spineless foreign policy, there is nothing stopping Russia from retaking all of Ukraine, or even pushing its troops west into Poland or Belarus.
The Russians claim that this intervention is necessary to protect ethnic Russians living outside the country. That’s funny; Hitler said the same thing when he annexed Austria during the Anschluss. Barack Obama sits poised to make the same mistake Europe made in the late 1930s when it tried to appease Adolf Hitler…
Whether Obama’s flawed foreign policy is by design, or whether it is the result of his epic ineptitude, the fact remains that the country and the world simply cannot afford the Obama presidency.
However, there is no reason that the United States must wait for Barack Hussein Obama to figure out how to lead. Congress has the constitutional authority to levy sanctions and, if necessary, declare war. No one really wants to use our military in any capacity during this crisis, however Barack Obama is using this as an excuse not to do anything and the world continues to laugh at him.
Sincerely,
Joe Otto
