Last weekend, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) appeared on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom with Bill Hemmer. Once again, he made the case for job creation through the Keystone XL Pipeline.
Speaker Boehner said: “Listen, the Keystone pipeline is critically important for our energy supply. America is about to enjoy –or North America – about to enjoy energy independence here in the next seven or eight years. This is going to give our country a great advantage when it comes to manufacturing more goods here in America and exporting them around the world. So we need to continue to build pipelines, to expand refineries, and to expand the exploration of oil and gas in America.”

The House Energy & Commerce Committee advanced legislation by Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE) (H.R. 3) that approves the Keystone pipeline and removes roadblocks that, even with presidential approval, could hold up its construction for years. The Keystone pipeline has already been blocked by the Obama administration for more than four years, and a final decision could be “many more months down the road,” The Hill recently reported.
April 22nd marked the final day of the United States State Department’s 45-day public comment period for the Keystone XL Pipeline. There have been 800,000-plus comments, mostly in favor of the pipeline construction.
The pipeline, held up by the Obama administration, will bring oil roughly 1,200 miles from Alberta, Canada to Nebraska. The southern segment is currently under construction would carry the crude product on to the Gulf Coast.
One of the comments was from Karen Harbert, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for 21st Century Energy: “The economic impact and long term benefits of the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline are significant and vitally important to American jobs and the economy, especially during this time of economic recovery.”
A Washington Examiner editorial echoes the frustration that we have with the administration. It reads: “Consider the Keystone XL Pipeline project, which was first proposed in September 2008. The privately-funded $7 billion project should have created over 13,000 construction jobs already, according to Obama's economic advisers. Those jobs don't yet exist, however, because the project is tied up in red tape. Federal bureaucrats have convened at least 20 Washington meetings, held nine field hearings along proposed pipeline routes from the Canadian border south to Texas, reviewed 1,800 comments, and written a 1,000-page Environmental Impact Statement, plus an 800-page Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in the construction industry is still 14.7 percent, and the Chinese keep offering inducements to Canada to forget the pipeline and sell its oil to them.”
In spite of the approval by the U.S. State Department, the Obama administration is still pushing back. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) objected to the State Department’s draft review of the pipeline route, saying it included “insufficient information” on environmental issues.
Roughly 70% of Americans and 60% of Canadians support the Keystone Pipeline.
In the meantime, tens of thousands of jobs are still ON HOLD!!
For American construction workers, the Obama administration is not just delaying a pipeline, it’s blocking “a lifeline” that will create 20,000 new jobs directly, and thousands more indirectly. The pipeline will also deliver nearly a million barrels of oil to the U.S., helping address high gas prices that are a perennial plague for American families and small businesses.
It’s well past time for President Obama to listen to the vast majority of the American people and approve the Keystone pipeline.
Three months ago, 53 United States Senators (44 Republicans and 9 Democrats) sent a letter to President Obama asking that he sign off on the 1,700-mile XL Pipeline. Yes, over one-half of United States Senators are backing this pipeline. There is NO reason for the White House to continue to stall!

House Speaker John Boehner previously reacted: “Nebraska’s approval of a new Keystone XL pipeline route means there is no bureaucratic excuse, hurdle, or catch President Obama can use to delay this project any further. He and he alone stand in the way of tens of thousands of new jobs and energy security. Every state along the proposed route supports this project, as does a bipartisan coalition in Congress and a majority of Americans. I recognize all the political pressure the president faces, but with our energy security at stake and many jobs in limbo, he should find a way to say yes.”

Reuter’s reports: “The Obama administration has delayed a decision on TransCanada Corp’s rerouted Keystone XL oil pipeline until after March, even though Nebraska’s governor approved a plan for part of the line running through his state. It was the latest delay on the pipeline, which has been pending for more than four years.”
Even the liberal Washington Post is even in favor of the pipeline: “President Obama rejected the Keystone XL oil pipeline this time last year, a result that Canada had every reason to be dismayed by, as did Americans whom the project would have employed. The issue is coming back, and the president has even less reason to nix the project than he did last time.”
Even the president’s own Jobs Council has come out in favor of the project, as well as a majority of Americans.
There is bipartisan support!
