In spite of Government Shutdown and Closure of WW II Memorial, Veterans Celebrate Anyway!
Obama Cannot Squelch Veteran’s Celebration!
Dear Conservative Friend,
The Government shutdown has begun!
But it is not enough to STOP WW II Two veterans!
The Obama Government Shutdown was “arranged” to inflict damage on veterans. Several groups of veterans from World War II ventured to Washington D.C. to remember their fallen comrades in World War Two.
In spite of the fact that the memorial is an OPEN AIR WWII MEMORIAL, it WAS BARRACADED due to the Government shutdown!! Someone had to be paid to block it off from people coming to walk the grounds!
These heroes were mostly between 85 – 95 years old and were there for a once in a life time visit. They managed to respect their fallen and still find solace in each other despite having to “trespass” on government property to pray for their former comrades. Honor Flight, a non-profit organization, helped to fly these veterans to the nation’s capital, just to visit the memorial and had planned it years ago.
This is an outside, free roaming park, with no inside museum and not one paid government employee missing in action due to the government shutdown.
Yet, representatives of the Obama administration, sent “reinforcements’ to “secure” the closed gates. The veterans continued on their march to celebrate their fallen comrades!
Many Obama administration minions actually wondered why they were dispatched to ward off these heroes and World War Two veterans.
In spite of the Democrat’s absolute refusal to negotiate, Veterans will continue to come to Washington to honor their fallen comrades.
They will do what happened yesterday. They will IGNORE the barricades put up by the Obama administration, and will celebrate their fallen comrades.
To many, including a 93-year-old veteran, they will honor their fellow veterans.
The shame upon the Obama administration is that they already knew these veterans had already scheduled a trip to the Memorial, yet they did NOT make any accommodations for them!
This included a request from a Congressman!
In reality, the Obama administration created more work and more debt to block the Veterans admittance. Since it is an open-air memorial which is most generally accessible 24/7, it required more work (and taxpayer dollars with the government shutdown) to block it off than to just simply leave it alone.
Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-MS) sent a letter to President Obama asking him to keep the World War II memorial open. His letter read:
“It would truly be devastating to our veterans that travel great lengths to share this experience with family and friends and see a piece of their own history,” Palazzo wrote in the letter. “Additionally, it would require extra effort, expense, and personnel to put up these barricades and enforce these regulations on open-air monuments than it would to allow Honor Flight veterans to visit their memorial.”
The group of WW II veterans numbered roughly 92 Mississippi Gulf Coast veterans, as well as 50 or so more veterans. They refused to let a government shutdown diminish their dream of honoring their fallen comrades.
Approximately 70 years ago they fought the enemy in Europe. Now, they are fighting governmental bureaucracy!
In spite of the closing, the National Mall provided a solace to the veterans who remembered those whose lives were taken in battle over 70 years ago.
It is not known who “officially” broke through the yellow tape, as they were all respectful of the situation of the moment.
U. S. Rep. Michele Bachman (R-MN) ran over to assist their celebration. She said, “There were all these veterans standing here behind police tape, and they’re prevented from going in to see the memorial. So about maybe eight to 12 of us members, one member had scissors and cut the tape and then we just escorted the veterans in, and there was a bagpiper along, and he led the way.”
Rep. Steven King (R-IA) also assisted in getting the gates to open for these outstanding veterans.

The government shutdown should never, ever turn away veterans (especially WW II veterans) from visiting an un-manned memorial established specifically for them!
Regardless of political affiliation or which side a Congressman takes, veterans must be allowed to visit their memorial!
Just let the vets move about their memorial and make sure they are not violating the government shutdown law.
Sincerely,
Joe Otto
