Dear Congress,

 

The Hill reported yesterday:

 

“Three House members on Tuesday sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to ask for additional details about how former generals receive waivers to consult on behalf of foreign governments. 

 

The letter from Reps. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.), Michael Cloud (R-Texas) and Jason Crow (D-Colo.) comes after a Washington Post report in October that noted more than 500 retired military personnel received waivers to pursue jobs with foreign governments with known human rights abuses and histories of political oppression.”

 

High level US officials are cleared to consult with foreign governments? While it inspires hope to see bipartisanship inquiry on this issue, why is it only signed by three of you? Only three of you care to understand this?

 

According to the letter: 

 

“Specifically, we are concerned by (1) the lack of transparency throughout the waiver approval process and reporting to Congress, (2) the lack of standardized internal procedures at DoD to implement the waiver approval process, (3) the lack of enforcement when retired U.S. military personnel violate the law by failing to report that they are advising foreign governments, (4) potential conflicts of interest identified during the waiver approval process, and (5) the degree International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) concerns identified by the State Department are discovered and resolved during the waiver approval process.

 

As D.C. District Court Judge Mehta ruled in Washington Post v. DoD, the public has a compelling interest in understanding the extent of influence that foreign powers may have over America’s former military leaders. The public also has the right to know if high-ranking retired military officers are taking advantage of their roles in government to create employment opportunities, some paying seven figure salaries, with foreign governments.”

 

We the People are concerned, too. We are concerned why more of YOU aren’t concerned about this overt threat to national security. 

 

DEMAND FOR REMEDY: We demand answers about who these 500 officials are, what they are consulting about, who they are consulting to, and what is the risk exposure for the United States of America.
