I am writing to you with a boiling rage and an urgent call for accountability regarding the outrageous and abhorrent treatment that led to the death of Gonzalo Lira. The events surrounding his demise demand not just attention but immediate and forceful action on the part of Congress.

On January 11th, 2024, Gonzalo Lira, a Chilean-American war commentator and journalist, passed away after an eight-month-long imprisonment in Ukraine on charges of "justifying Russia's military actions in Ukraine." The reported conditions of Lira's imprisonment were nothing short of brutal, involving torture, extortion, and isolation for over 8 months.

Gonzalo Lira gained recognition in 2022 for daring to be highly critical of the war between Ukraine and Russia. He expressed that the war in Ukraine was  a proxy conflict orchestrated by the US against Russia and vehemently argued for the cessation of US funding for this senseless war.

In May of 2023, Lira was arrested by Ukrainian authorities on charges of "production and dissemination of materials justifying Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.” This arrest was a blatant assault on free speech, as Lira's expressions were critical and in opposition to the Ukrainian narrative.

During his imprisonment, Lira faced debilitating health issues, including double pneumonia, pneumothorax, and severe edema, which were callously ignored by the prison authorities. Only during a hearing on December 22nd was his pneumonia acknowledged, and he was begrudgingly admitted for treatment. Sadly, after enduring untreated illnesses for two months, Gonzalo Lira passed away in a hospital in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Throughout Lira’s captivity, his father, Gonzalo Lira Sr., desperately sought assistance from the US embassy to highlight his son's critical condition and the blatant lack of transparency from Ukrainian authorities. Shockingly, no action was taken by the embassy.

This infuriating incident demands immediate and decisive action from Congress. Gonzalo Lira, an American commentator and journalist, was wrongfully imprisoned for daring to voice opinions that contradicted the Ukrainian government's narrative. Denied basic human rights and subjected to untreated illnesses, he met an untimely death in a foreign country.

I demand, as a concerned and outraged citizen, that you take the following steps:

1. Demand swift and uncompromising justice for Gonzalo Lira and his grieving family.

2. Immediately cease ALL funding to Ukraine, a country complicit in this heinous act.

3. Advocate for the unequivocal severance of ties with dictatorial powers, such as the Zelensky regime, responsible for the imprisonment, torture, and murder of those critical of their policies.

This is not a request; it is a demand for accountability and justice. The United States cannot, in good conscience, continue supporting a country that flagrantly violates the rights of its own citizens.

I expect nothing less than an immediate response to rectify this grave injustice.
