Social Media Platforms and the Fight Against Human Trafficking: A Call for Action.V

The Statewide Council on Human Trafficking in Florida conducted a survey to assess the role of social media platforms in facilitating human trafficking. The results revealed that Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger) were implicated in over 53% of reported instances, far surpassing other platforms like Snapchat. The survey findings are supported by the 2022 Federal Human Trafficking Report, which identified Facebook as the top platform for recruiting trafficking victims. Additionally, Meta platforms accounted for 85% of reported incidents of child exploitation. As Chair of the Council, Florida's Attorney General invites Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, to discuss the company's efforts to prevent platform misuse. Urgent action is needed to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals, and collaborative efforts between regulators, law enforcement, and social media companies are crucial in achieving this goal.
